Unraveling the Origins of Valentine’s Day And Why Jewellery is the Perfect Gift

Unraveling the Origins of Valentine’s Day And Why Jewellery is the Perfect Gift

Valentine’s Day, celebrated every February 14th, didn’t start with heart-shaped chocolates or fancy dinners. Its origins weave back to ancient Rome.

Saint Valentine: The Unsung Hero

The most popular legend centers around Saint Valentine, a Roman priest who lived during the reign of Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. Claudius believed single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, so he outlawed marriage for young men.

But Valentine, a believer in the sanctity of love, defied the emperor. He secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young couples. When his actions were discovered, Claudius ordered his execution on February 14, 270 AD.

Another legend tells us that while imprisoned, Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. On the day of his death, he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine” a phrase still used today!

The Birds & The Poets

Fast forward to the Middle Ages. The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer is credited with linking Valentine’s Day to romantic love. In his 1382 poem Parliament of Fowls, he wrote: “For this was on St. Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”

This idea that February 14th was the day birds chose their partners sealed Valentine’s Day as a celebration of love and courtship. Soon, nobles began exchanging handwritten “valentines” often adorned with intricate designs.

By the 18th century, giving gifts became customary. Handmade cards evolved into mass-produced greetings and eventually, jewellery stepped into the spotlight.

From Quills to Pop Culture: Valentine’s Day Today

Centuries later, Valentine’s Day has moved from royal courts and handwritten letters to streaming platforms and social media feeds.

  • Romantic films like “Valentine’s Day,” “Notting Hill,” “The Notebook,” or closer to home, “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” and “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” have turned February 14th into a global cinematic event.
  • Web series and K‑dramas showcase grand proposals, surprise gifts and heirloom jewels as defining moments in a relationship.
  • On Instagram and TikTok, Valentine’s unboxing Reels, couple shoots and proposal videos have become the modern equivalent of those medieval love letters.

Yet amid all this change, one thing has remained beautifully constant: when love reaches a defining moment, jewellery still takes centre stage. From Rose’s Heart of the Ocean in Titanic, to the emerald ring in Crazy Rich Asians,  jewellery keeps appearing at the turning points of our favourite love stories. Because on-screen or off-screen, jewellery feels like forever.

Why Jewellery Became the Ultimate Valentine’s Gift

As society evolved, so did expressions of love. Flowers may wilt and chocolates get eaten, but Jewellery endures. It’s a tangible symbol of everlasting love and here’s why it resonates so deeply.

1. A Token of Permanence

Jewellery is forever. A diamond, a gold bracelet, or a personalized pendant becomes an heirloom, a physical reminder of your love that can be treasured for a lifetime and even passed down generations. When you gift jewellery, you’re saying,“My love for you is eternal.”

2. Personalization Tells Your Story

Imagine gifting a necklace with your partner’s initials or birthstone jewellery representing your family. You’re not just giving a gift; you’re gifting a memory.

3. The Language of Symbols

Throughout history, jewellery has spoken volumes:

Rings = Commitment (Think: engagement rings)

Heart-shaped pendants = Affection

Infinity symbols = Everlasting love Even ancient Egyptians exchanged jeweled amulets to ward off evil and symbolize protection, proving that adornments have always been vessels for our deepest emotions.
